Pantheon: Where to Find It and How to Reach It

The Pantheon of Rome, also known as the Basilica Santa Maria ad Martyres, is located at Piazza della Rotonda 1 in central Rome’s Pigna district, a short distance from Piazza Navona and St. Peter’s Basilica.

Reaching the Pantheon is easy, and in this article we will show you how. You have several options at your disposal: walking, taking a bus or subway, using acar, although this option is not the most recommended.

We offer all options, you choose the best one for you.

Where is the Pantheon located?

The Pantheon’s earthly address is Piazza della Rotonda 1, 00186 Rome. You are in the Pignadistrict, R IX, a historical center that can’t be more central, if you think that this was the ancient Campus Martius, the place from which Romulus ascended to heaven.

Within a few hundred meters you have at your disposal most of the city’s most significant sites.

Staying in this very central area allows you to reach everything in a short time and with little effort, especially if you move around on foot.

Depending on what your starting point is, the path may be longer or shorter, easy or complicated.

Given the characteristics of the area and the fact that Rome is not the easiest city to get around by car, the first advice we feel to give you is to use public transportation or go on foot.

Let’s explore all the possibilities.

This is the most fascinating solution, partly because the Pantheon is immersed and surrounded by the beauty of Rome’s Historic Center.

Just to give a few examples: it takes 10 minutes from the Pantheon to reach Piazza Navona, Campo dei Fiori and the Trevi Fountain; a good 15 minutes to the Spanish Steps, a half-hour to the Colosseum and the Roman Forum.

Same for St. Peter’s and Castel Sant’Angelo.

The times are indicative: you can go at a fast pace or take it slower. It just depends on you and the time you have available. If you’re staying downtown, you’re definitely okay.

To navigate your way through some of Rome’s icons, you can use a navigator (set it to “walking” mode) or a map, ask Romans or follow the “currents” of tourists.

If your choice of mobility in Rome falls on public transportation, the best way to reach the Pantheon is bybus.

There are no less than 7 lines at your disposal: 30, 40, 62, 64, 81, 87 and 492.

They all stop at Largo di Torre Argentina, where among other things there are important Roman remains from the Republican and Imperial periods as well as a feline colony.

From there, to get to the Hadrianic temple, you have a short and pleasant 400-meter walk.

What will it be: 5, 6 minutes at a normal pace?

If you want, there’s also the Tram, with line 8, which stops at Arenula/Cairoli: about ten minutes walk and you’re at the Pantheon.

The subway is also a smart way to get around Rome’s Historic Center. The A line is the reference line to the Pantheon, the Barberini stop.

From the stop, the distance to your destination is 700 meters. Not very close, but you’re in Rome and you’re always walking in beauty.

Along the way you can visit the Triton Fountain and the Fountain of the Bees, both made by Bernini. Or you can walk by the Trevi Fountain, Via del Corso, Via Veneto and maybe even find time for a little shopping.

There is always the “pedibus calcantibus” option, on foot treading the ground. It is more or less 3 kilometers. You can take 50 to 60 minutes depending on your pace.

Along the way you encounter the papal basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, with its splendid mosaics, Piazza della Repubblica, the Trevi Fountain. “Fatigue” well rewarded.

Let’s Move Belsiana: it is 700 meters away, a 10-minute walk. Strategic parking for visiting the Spanish Steps and Villa Borghese as well.

Saba Cola di Rienzo: is located 1.6 km from the Pantheon. You can reach it by bus, line 70 by getting off at the Rinascimento stop, which is a short walk from the Pantheon. Alternative lines 30, 81, 87 or 628 direction Rinascimento.

SABA Piazza di Spagna – Villa Borghese: If you park in this area, you have to take bus line 160 from the Victor Hugo/Museo Bilotti stop to Corso/Minghetti and walk there. Alternatively, there is the Metro Line A from Spagna and get off at Barberini. From here you have a walk of 700. If you choose to walk, figure 30/40 minutes.

Garage Nazionale – Termini Station: This is located near the train station. To get to the Pantheon from here you can choose to walk (a couple of kilometers), take the Metro Line A, Barberini stop, or go by bus on lines 40 or 64.
